Local sports reporter
Limestone Post
About
Limestone Post Magazine is the flagship publication of Limestone Media, Inc., a local nonprofit news outlet that publishes in-depth articles on a range of topics for readers in Monroe and surrounding counties in south-central Indiana. As readers have requested, we want to include more reporting on local high school sports and student athletes.
Story Assignments
A student freelance sportswriter for Limestone Post would write 3 to 5 sports articles from September through December 2024, or about one article per month. The writer can pitch enterprise, profile, or feature stories ranging from 1,000 to 2,500 words on local high school sports. Limestone Post might also assign a particular story to a reporter. After a story has been assigned, Limestone Post’s editing staff can help with story development (finding sources, making contacts, compiling data, etc.), but the writer must conduct the interviews, do their own research, and write the article. LP’s editing staff will work with the writer on final edits and fact-checking.
Ideally, the writer will report on topics not generally covered by other local media (including newspapers and radio stations) but rather will give Limestone Post readers new insights into the topics covered. These could include human-interest feature stories, profiles of rarely covered sports, guides to upcoming seasons, etc. We are not a deadline-driven publication, so we will not publish game summaries and the like. That said, we do expect the assignments to be turned in by the agreed-upon deadline — especially if the article includes time-sensitive information, such as an upcoming event discussed in the article. If more time is needed, the writer can discuss it with the editor.
Freelance Agreement
The writer would be paid directly by Limestone Media as part of an independent contractor agreement the student and LP editor must sign. The fee is $100 per article and $50 to $100 for photos, if any are used. Use of videos and other multimedia will be discussed on an individual basis.
The writer will supply Limestone Post with a 50- to 100-word contributor bio and photo of themself for LP’s Contributors page. They must also complete and return a W-9 tax form (which we’ll provide) before payment can be made. Payment will be made after publication of the article and after an invoice is received from the writer.
