Verghese work accepted for South Asia panel discussion
Doctoral student Roshni Verghese’s paper, “Nirbhaya: India’s Daughter or India’s Dilemma?” has been accepted for a panel presentation at the 44th Annual Conference on South Asia Oct. 24 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Verghese analyzed the representations of a rape and murder victim as depicted in the documentary India’s Daughter, which is based on the 2012 case of Jyoti Singh, 23-year-old student in Delhi. According to the researcher, Singh’s narrative “is deployed as an exemplar of neoliberal exceptionalism, a symbol of feminist movements in India, and as a medico-judicial state subject, which disrupts the oft used ‘modern-traditional’ binary describing a burgeoning nation.”
