Sheaffer work set for Atlanta
Two films and an installation piece by doctoral student Russell Sheaffer will be featured in the 40th Annual Atlanta Film Festival April 1-10.
The films, It’s So Easy (The Mechanism of Power) and On Surgery both were created with composer Aaron Michael Smith and both were inspired by an auto accident in which Sheaffer suffered injuries and a lawsuit to determine damages.
It’s So Easy (The Mechanism of Power) explores the consequences of disproportionate access to moments in others’ lives in a dystopian landscape. Sheaffer draws from footage used against him in a trial to create a constantly changing viewing experience.
On Surgery looks at trauma, memory and abstraction. Sheaffer tried to depict the process of bone surgery, and the film’s music includes excerpts from his post-surgical diary entries.
The Atlanta Film Festival overlaps with the Society for Cinema and Media Studies’ annual conference in Atlanta March 30 to April 3.
