Ogan, Pennington, Metz article analyzes migration coverage during 2016 election
An article by professor emerita Christine Ogan and two Media School alumni appears in the latest edition of Communications: The European Journal of Communication Research.
“Who drove the discourse? News coverage and policy framing of immigrants and refugees in the 2016 U.S. presidential election,” by Ogan; Rosemary Pennington, PhD’15; Olesya Venger of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas; and Daniel Metz, BAJ’17, analyzes news coverage of migration policy during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
The study finds that political themes primarily drove the news coverage, with Donald Trump or a member of his team most often serving as theme sponsor. It also finds that about half of the stories were neutral or balanced in tone, but that negative stories were sponsored either by the Trump team or other actors.
