Media School sponsors Scripps Regional Spelling Bee

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Students from South Central Indiana will participate in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by The Media School, on March 5. Due to the pandemic, students will use the Scripps Online Testing Platform to complete the spelling/vocabulary test.
Students will be monitored by a teacher while taking the test, and they are allowed 30 minutes any time from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 5.
Students through the eighth grade who have won spelling bees at their schools in Brown, Greene, Monroe, Morgan and Owen counties will compete. This year’s spellers are:
- Della Hitchcock, sixth grade, Brown County Intermediate School
- Alayna Jacobus, seventh grade, Brown County Junior High
- Yuxuan Xun, eighth grade, Jackson Creek Middle School
- Olivia Richardson, sixth grade, Seven Oaks Classical School
- Yena Park, sixth grade, University Elementary School
- Nate Robbins, fifth grade, Bell Intermediate Academy
- Hope Gunn, fourth grade, Brooklyn Elementary School
- Pippa Ralph, fourth grade, Centerton Elementary School
- Ainsley McCary, fourth grade, Charles L Smith Elementary School
- Chloe Allen, fourth grade, Helmsburg Elementary School
- Xander Hutton, eighth grade, John R. Wooden Middle School
- Julia Crone, fourth grade, Paragon Elementary School
- Hayden Atkins, fourth grade, South Elementary School
- Eli Wood, fifth grade, Spencer Elementary School
- Carson Albright, fourth grade, Linton-Stockton Elementary
The regional champion also receives the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award, a U.S. Mint Proof Set and a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online, the bee’s official dictionary.
High School Journalism Institute director Teresa White administers the regional contest, known as the IU Bee.
“Although the IU Bee has moved online for this year, we are grateful for the opportunity to recognize 15 excellent school champions,” White said. “We continue to be inspired by their accomplishments and dedication to the English language.”
The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be July 8 in Orlando, Florida, at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort. The final rounds, including 10 to 12 spellers, will be offered in person and will follow the preliminary, quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the bee.
