The academy will take place on the IU Bloomington campus in June. The Media School will also offer the Game Development Camp in June and the High School Journalism Institute, now in its 72nd year, in July.
Digital Cinema Academy
The Digital Cinema Academy, June 18 to 22, will introduce students to the school’s industry-standard studios and equipment while incorporating lectures from industry leaders, including Michael Uslan, producer of the “Batman” movies. Uslan is a professor of practice at The Media School and an IU alumnus. Other academy faculty include award-winning TV producers and crew members for series including Fox’s “Empire” and ABC’s “Mind Games.”
“Indiana University is making some great strides in its cinema program, and the Digital Cinema Academy is something we’re very excited about in The Media School,” said academy director and Media School lecturer Craig Erpelding. “Nowhere else will high school students be able to learn and discuss filmmaking with the executive producer of iconic movies like ‘The Dark Knight.’ So we’re looking forward to sharing our insight with the next generation of young artists.”
While on campus, students will work in groups to produce a short film, attend and discuss screenings, and show their work in a public exhibition. They will also be introduced to cinema critique and analysis to develop a deeper understanding of the cinematic arts.
The deadline to apply for the Digital Cinema Academy is May 15.
Game Development Camp
The Game Development Camp offers a unique opportunity for students age 13 to 18 who are curious about a career in the games industry. Game Camp requires no previous experience. Students can choose from four residential programs and may choose to attend more than one session:
- 2-D program, June 11 to 15 or June 18 to 22. Students will design and develop their own 2-D games, deployable to the web, PC/Mac/Linux, mobile devices and others.
- 3-D program, June 11 to 15 or June 25 to 29. Students will manipulate and build interactivity for objects and environments while exploring an advanced 3-D game engine, Unreal Engine 4, a pro tool used to create some of the world’s hottest games.
- GirlPowered!, June 18 to 22, exclusively for girls. This session will teach and empower girls to explore game design. They’ll learn to dream big and develop technical skills, preparing them for college and beyond.
- Game Code Camp, June 18 to 22. New this year, Game Code Camp teaches fundamentals of computer programming from a game development perspective. Students will learn code structures and strategies within game engine environments and create their own custom-designed mechanics to add to their games.
Register for any of the Game Development Camps by May 25.
