Martin authors book chapter on black cinema revolution
Professor and director of the Black Film Center/Archive Michael Martin is author of “Struggles for the Sign in the Black Atlantic: Los Angeles Collective of Black Filmmakers,” a chapter in the news book, L.A. Rebellion: Creating a New Black Cinema.
The book, published University of California Press in November, looks at members of a group of independent film and video artists from the University of California called the L.A. Rebellion.
The L.A. Rebellion wanted to challenge dominant portrayals of black experiences in American cinema. Martin’s chapter looks back on the 40 years that have passed since the L.A. Rebellion’s black creative renaissance in filmmaking.
