Lanich selected for national hate crime reporting project
Senior Carley Lanich has been selected to be a part of a national project reporting on hate crimes in the U.S.
Students in the 2018 Carnegie-Knight News 21 multimedia reporting initiative are participating in a spring semester seminar in which they conduct research, interview experts and begin their reporting. Leonard Downie Jr., former executive editor of The Washington Post, and News21 Executive Editor Jacquee Petchel, former Houston Chronicle senior editor for investigations and enterprise, are teaching the seminar via video conference.
At the conclusion of the seminar, the students will begin work in paid summer fellowships, working out of a newsroom at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and traveling across the country to report their stories.
Twenty-six students from 19 journalism programs will participate in the ninth iteration of the program.
Lanich, an Ernie Pyle Scholar, is the editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student this semester.
Headquartered at ASU’s Cronkite School, News21 was established by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to demonstrate that college journalism students can produce innovative, in-depth multimedia projects on a national scale.
