Kilgo publishes article on progression of Black Lives Matter coverage
A new article by assistant professor Danielle Kilgo in Journalism Practice examines the progression of mainstream news coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement between 2012 and 2014, the time period between the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown.
“Martin to Brown: How time and platform impact coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement,” by Kilgo, Rachel Mourao of Michigan State University and George Sylvie of the University of Texas-Austin, finds that despite the maturation of the movement and the increased awareness of shooting deaths of unarmed black men, journalists still struggled to legitimize Black Lives Matter protests in 2014.
The study also found that journalists introduced more legitimizing coverage of the movement only after George Zimmerman and Darren Wilson were both acquitted.
