Hawkins, Kelly retire from The Media School
Two Media School faculty members retired at the end of the spring semester. Together, professor Joan Hawkins and senior lecturer Susan Kelly include decades of teaching experience and research.
Joan Hawkins

Hawkins earned her doctorate in comparative literature at the University of California Berkeley in 1993. She has been a professor at IU for over 30years, and has written numerous articles, book chapters, and anthologies on communication and culture.
Initially a French and English literature student, Hawkins was eventually drawn to film studies from her interest in feminist theory. Now, her teaching interest includes concepts such as film theory and history, European art cinema, French cinema, fascism and psychoanalysis.
Apart from her role at The Media School, she is also a devoted patron of IU Cinema and a member of the Writer’s Guild at Bloomington.
Susan Kelly

Kelly has been at IU for 30 years and has been awarded several teaching awards throughout her tenure.
Her research interests are heavily influenced by the latest developments in visual storytelling, screenwriting, and overseas study experiences.
Some of the courses she taught include script writing and feature film screen writing. She has also led The Media School three-week summer travel course Smartphone Filmmaking in Prague for several years.
