Francis awarded 2018 summer faculty fellowship
Dr. Terri Francis, director of the Black Film Center/Archive (BFC/A), has been awarded a 2018 IU Bloomington Summer Faculty Fellowship. During the fellowship in June and July, Francis will be working on her new book Quilted Films: African American Home Movies and Historical Memory, 1924–1975.
“In Quilted Films, I reframe personal family films as both art and historical artifact,” Francis said. “The title evokes the qualities of warmth, improvisation, and intimacy often associated with homemade quilts while the project situates and animates them with larger questions of African American visibility, public space, and historical memory.”
Francis plans to write about collections of films like the Solomon Sir Jones Films and Hayes Family Movies. BFC/A has been running a series in Spring 2018 related to Francis’s research entitled Black Film Nontheatrical, which Francis says “foregrounds home movies, amateur narratives, corporate films and other moving images make for specific audiences whether congregants, families or employees.”
Catch the last showing in the Black Film Nontheatrical series, with visiting guest Shani Miller, on April 26.
