Evans, Kruse advance to Hearst championship
Recent Media School graduate Jack Evans and rising senior Nyssa Kruse will participate in the finals of the 2018 Hearst National Writing Championship June 3-7 in San Francisco.
They will compete against six other students from around the country. The finalists are winners of five writing contests held throughout the year as part of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program, as well as the three students with the combined highest scores in all the writing categories. The categories are enterprise reporting, sports, breaking news, personality/profile writing and feature writing.
Evans qualified for the championship by winning the personality/profile writing category for “The man in black,” a profile of a funeral director. He also earned second place in the feature writing category with “Something in the night,” a story about the endangered Indiana bat.
Kruse’s combined scores, earned through her second place in personality/profile writing and eighth place in enterprise reporting, won her slot in the championship. Her personality profile, “Primary Care,” followed a doctor dealing with opioid abuse in a small Indiana town. Her enterprise reporting piece, “Off stage,” chronicled a rebuilding period for the Jacobs School of Music ballet department. Kruse will be the editor-in-chief of the IDS in the fall.
In the 2017 championship, Media School students Taylor Telford and Hannah Alani placed first and third respectively, and IU finished first overall in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition.
