The International Press Institute
About:
The International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of editors, journalists and media executives dedicated to defending media freedom and the free flow of news, is seeking interns to work in its Vienna, Austria, office during the summer of 2025.
IPI is seeking interns who are highly motivated and have a keen interest in human rights, particularly press freedom. IPI is looking for undergraduate or graduate-level students, or recent graduates, seeking work experience in an international human rights NGO environment. Applicants must have strong English-language skills. IPI welcomes candidates who have knowledge of additional languages, which should be specified in the cover letter and/or resumé. Interns should have strong writing skills and journalistic instincts and be comfortable contacting sources and developing contacts. IPI welcomes interns with additional skills, such as social media, photography and videography, multimedia design, or legal research. Interns must be available to work five days a week and must possess excellent interpersonal skills. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: monitoring press freedom transgressions and developments around the world and writing journalistic-style articles and statements on press freedom issues; researching press freedom topics and drafting reports; contributing to IPI’s projects, campaigns and publications; interacting with IPI, and other, media stakeholders; and increasing IPI’s exposure using social networking tools. The position reports to the Director of Advocacy. IPI internships are demanding positions and require a high degree of initiative and an ability to work independently and in a multicultural environment.
Each intern will be expected to work eight to 10 weeks during the summer. The exact number of weeks and the start and end dates are negotiable.
These internships are unpaid. IPI can provide limited logistical assistance to selected candidates, including assistance in finding accommodations in Vienna. Students may be eligible for scholarships and internship credit on their campuses.
How to Apply:
Please submit a cover letter, resumé, and five clips of journalistic work in one digital file, preferably in PDF or Word format. The cover letter should specify a geographic or subject matter area or a specific project the student would like to work on in Vienna. The deadline to submit is Dec. 1, 2024. The successful applicants shall be notified by IPI by mid-January 2025.
