Research and Creative Interestsmedia industries, popular music, media technologies, Audio, Globalization and culture, New media,
I'm a PhD student in the Media School at Indiana University. I completed my MA in Media Studies from Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where I focused on independent music, place and space, globalization and cultural identity. I did my undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon, majoring in Political Science and Telecommunication & Film. Outside of academic work, I come from an extensive background as a professional musician, starting out in jazz and later morphing into indie rock and electronic music. I've spent a large chunk of my life in various roles within the music industry as a songwriter, performer, and music producer, and in recent collaborations with global DJs as vocalist and composer. My scholarly focus stems from these practical 'everyday life' experiences, but I also focus on areas of culture and technology, popular music and media industry studies. I'm currently interested in cultural shifts taking place in independent production and distribution due to digital technologies, the Internet and how they affect cultural practices, creativity, innovation and identity.
