Deadlines

The Media School admits a select number of applicants each year to its M.S., M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. The priority date for fall 2017 matriculation for international applicants is Dec. 1, 2016, and the priority date for fall 2017 matriculation for domestic students is Jan. 15, 2017.

Programs

Current programs in The Media School to which you may apply are the M.S. in Media, the M.A. in Media Arts and Sciences and the Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences.

The M.S. in Media offers four practical concentrations in professional areas: Design and Production; Journalism; Media Management; and Public Relations. The M.A. in Media Arts and Sciences leads to further study at the Ph.D. level or to careers in research or teaching.

Fees

The application fee is $55 for domestic students and $65 for international students. The fee must be paid via credit card. Applications are not reviewed until the fee is paid.

GRE and TOEFL scores

GRE scores from the past five years are required. Our GRE institution code is 1324. Our GRE departmental code is 4507.

All non-native English-speaking applicants must take the TOEFL exam. Our required minimum overall score is 100. Our TOEFL code is 1324.

Admissions requirements

M.S. in Media
  • Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent
  • At least a B (3.0) average in the major over the last two years of an undergraduate program, or professional equivalency.
  • GRE scores from the last 5 years.
  • Statement of purpose: Tell us about your career direction and goals.
  • Three letters of recommendation: Requests for references should be sent through the online application.
  • An academic writing sample or creative portfolio.
  • Paper TOEFL score greater than 600, computer-based TOEFL score greater than 250, or Internet-based TOEFL score greater than 100 for international students.
  • Applications from students who have not majored in media or communication areas at the bachelor’s level are welcomed. If admitted, these students may be required to take supplementary courses.
M.A. in Media Arts and Sciences
  • Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent
  • At least a B (3.0) average in the major over the last two years of an undergraduate program, or professional equivalency.
  • GRE scores from within the past 5 years.
  • Statement of purpose: Tell us about your academic and career direction and goals.
  • Three letters of recommendation: Requests for references should be sent through the online application.
  • Paper TOEFL score greater than 600, computer-based TOEFL score greater than 250, or Internet-based TOEFL score greater than 100 for international students
  • An academic writing sample
  • A curriculum vita
Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences
  • Master’s or comparable degree from a recognized institution with a minimum 3.5 GPA (or equivalent).
  • GRE scores from with the past 5 years.
  • Statement of purpose: Tell us about your academic and career direction and goals.
  • Three letters of recommendation: At least one letter should come from a professor in your area of study. Requests for references should be sent through the online application.
  • Paper TOEFL score greater than 600, computer-based TOEFL score greater than 250, or Internet-based TOEFL score greater than 100 for international students
  • A writing sample
  • A curriculum vitae

Transcripts

We must receive official transcripts from your previous higher education institutions. There are three acceptable options:

  • The college or university may mail us a hard copy of the official transcript directly;
  • The college or university may securely email us an official electronic transcript;
  • You may place a hard copy transcript sealed by the college or university in a larger envelope and mail it to us. If it is not obvious that the transcript was sealed by the institution, we will not accept it as official.
