Biography
Dr. Nicole Martins (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2008) is a Professor in the Media School and Director of Research and Creative Activity. Dr. Martins’ expertise concerns the social and psychological effects of the media on youth. She has a longstanding interest on the effects of relationally aggressive portrayals in the media, as well the impact of the media on children’s self-esteem and body-image concerns. She has published over fifty scholarly articles and book chapters, and her work appears in a wide-range of peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Health Communication and Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. Dr. Martins has received numerous top paper awards from the National Communication Association and International Communication Association, and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Children and Media. Dr. Martins was a featured speaker on a panel concerning the representation of girls in the media sponsored by The White House Council on Women and Girls. Dr. Martins is frequently quoted in national news outlets on topics related to children and media.
