Biography
My primary journalistic experience has been more than three decades as a reporter and columnist for The Herald-Times, Bloomington’s daily newspaper. I covered several beats including K-12 and Higher Education, Regional Reporter, Investigative Reporter and Special Projects Reporter. Additionally I wrote a public education column, a popular music/music scene column, and for more than 25 years, a general interest column. I served as Executive Editor and Senior Associate Editor of Bloom Magazine from 2013-16 (and also wrote a column). Along the way I’ve written for magazines as varied as Rolling Stone, the IU Alumni Magazine, The LION (international magazine for Lions Clubs around the world), and Casino Executive Magazine. I’ve been an adjunct lecturer at IU since 1987, teaching in journalism and telecommunications. I’m also a past president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists and a longtime board member of the NSNC and NSNC Foundation. In 2018 I received the NSNC’s Legacy Award for service to the organization and the field of journalism.
