“What I was part of starting, which is now the Hoosier Network, that was IU Sport Com. We had a chance to take people who didn’t want to do just one thing. People who wanted to podcast, people who wanted to do video, people who wanted to write and kind of converge all of that in one site. So for us to be able to do that in 2009 felt like it was a little bit ahead of its time because there really wasn’t another space for that. We built that into something that was really cool.
Honestly, I knew coming into IU that I wanted to go into journalism. I wanted to be a Spanish major, and I wanted to be a journalism major, and I did both. I stuck with it because I knew coming to a place like this you don’t have to be a junior before you get your first on-air opportunity.
There is no other journalism school in the country that can touch what IU does. You get opportunities the day you walk on campus if you seize them. That’s what I did in 2008, and that’s how it is right now in 2022.
I love that I get to do so much of everything. I’m not just a beat writer. I really enjoy doing a lot of everything and not hav(ing) to pigeonhole myself into one thing.
Some of my best friends that I still keep up with were in student media with me. We really were a big family, and I’ve really enjoyed seeing where people’s careers have gone.”
