Encompassing an array of media-based research, faculty in this area broadly study how audiences select, use and process media messages — in all their forms — and the effects of those messages at an individual and societal level. Such effects can be direct and indirect, short-term and long-term, and can pertain to beliefs, emotions, attitudes and behavior. This area of research often employs research methods like experiments, surveys and content analyses. Faculty draw from a range of academic scholarship, including that of cognitive, social and developmental psychology, sociology and political science.
