WIUX student radio named best in nation
WIUX 99.1 FM, IU’s student-run radio station, won top honors recently at the 76th annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System international conference in New York City.
The station was named Best College/University Station in the nation and won Best Website and Best Public Service Promo.
The Best Public Service Promo award went to “Depression Awareness” by students Sam Rumpza and Ben Wittenstein.
Industry professionals judged submissions, and the IBS press release said that given the number of entries, being named a finalist means the station was in the top 10 percent in the nation.
“Being able to represent IU and Pure Student Radio in order to be named best college radio station is incredible and something that WIUX couldn’t have done without all of the staff and DJs, amazing listeners and the Bloomington community,” said Sarah Thompson, station manager, in a press release.
WIUX was a finalist in six other categories:
- Best news feature for Islamaphobia by Brenden Spangler.
- Best promo series for State of the Station by Sarah Thompson, Sam Velazquez, Michael Henderson and Anne Broach.
- Best specialty music show for Off the Record by Jack Garrison.
- Best underwriting campaign for Culture Shock by Eikhmal Syafiq.
- Best station ID for Alabama Shakes ID by Collin Thomas.
- Best sports play-by-play for Little 500 by Sam Pumpza, Ben Wittenstein, Cole Dunbar and Sean Nash.
