Study by alumna, students, former faculty member examines power dynamics in communications research
An article authored by Media School students, an alumna and a former faculty member discusses the power dynamics between primary investigators, research assistants and participants in communication research.
“A Critical Approach to Investigating Communication Practices of Marginalized Populations Using Longitudinal Field Experiments,” by Glenna Read, PhD’18, of the University of Georgia; doctoral students Laura Partain, Zachary Vaughn, Antonina Semivolos and Philip Anderson; and Amy Gonzales of the University of California Santa Barbara, appears in Communication Methods and Measures.
The article discusses the power dynamics among primary investigators, research assistants and participants in communication research, and suggests that field experiments are one way researchers may address inherent power balances in research. The work has the capacity to benefit scholarship from various epistemological traditions invested in socially conscious research within marginalized communities.
