Social media and e-cigarette use linked, Zheng study finds
Social media use is tied to United States youth’s risk perception and subsequent use of e-cigarettes, Media School doctoral candidate Xia Zheng found in a study published in Addictive Behaviors.
Zheng explores the relationship between social media use and e-cigarette use in youth in “Social Media and E-cigarette Use among US Youth: Longitudinal Evidence on the Role of Online Advertisement Exposure and Risk Perception,” by Zheng, Wenbo Li, Su-Wei Wong and Hsien-Chang Lin.
The paper uses a longitudinal survey with a nationally representative sample of U.S. youth. The study indicates that social media use is associated with increased e-cigarette use through online e-cigarette advertisement exposure and decreased e-cigarette risk perception.
