Senior Jack Evans wins Keating feature writing competition
Senior Jack Evans took first place in this weekend’s 31st annual Thomas R. Keating Competition, besting nine other finalists from Indiana colleges in a spot feature writing contest.
The participants were given five hours to report and write a story about Veterans Day. Evans, an Ernie Pyle Scholar, won $3,000 for his story about veterans who gathered at a Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
Senior Taylor Telford, who won the 2016 competition, placed third and won $1,250 for her story about businesses offering free meals to veterans. Junior Laurel Demkovich and sophomore Sarah Verschoor also represented IU as competition finalists.
An IU student has won the contest for eight years in a row. The competition is sponsored by the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation.
