Senior Evan Smail to present paper at national conference
Senior Evan Smail has been selected to present a paper at a competitive national conference this week.
Smail will present his paper, “Interruption and Infection: The Television as a Diseased Body,” at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Undergraduate Conference April 24-25 at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.
The paper borrows the science-fiction metaphor of technology-as-disease, one that infects humans as technology becomes rampant.
“Ultimately, I argue that this infection is closely related to the projects of late capitalism which work to transform the individual into a technologically augmented entity designed to thrive in a consumerist landscape,” he said.
Smail wrote the paper for associate professor Joan Hawkin’s class, Nightmare Movies, last fall. Hawkins encouraged him to submit the paper and helped him prepare his presentation, Smail said.
SCMS is a national organization, and this is the third conference it has organized to recognize undergraduate scholarship and achievement in the field.
