Purcell receives Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship

Doctoral candidate Sean Purcell has been awarded the Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship in the History of Medicine and Public Health from the New York Academy of Medicine.
The fellowship, which will span 2023, supports research using the New York Academy of Medicine Library’s resources for scholarly study of the history of medicine and public health with a focus on visual culture.
Purcell’s research examines the visual media produced by American tuberculosis researchers around the turn of the 20th century. Critical of the exploitative practices of medical researchers during this period, his work reflects on the visual culture produced by medical scientists.
The “Imaging Consumption” installation that is being developed for this fellowship will be presented during the 2023-24 school year.
