Parameswaran presents research on beauty, norms at conference
Professor Radhika Parameswaran presented her research, “Jamming the Color Line: Parodies and Spoofs of Indian Advertising,” as an invited speaker at the Passport to the World: Contemporary South Asia Initiative of the College of Arts & Sciences, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Oct. 4.
The talk focused on how amateur YouTube users create parodies of Indian commercials for skin-lightening products. Parameswaran’s research aimed to question the potential of these parodies and bring to light issues of oppressive beauty standards and norms in India.
Parameswaran’s research interests include gender and media, cultural studies, South Asia and qualitative research.
