Ogan paper on Taksim Square protests published
Professor Emerita Chris Ogan’s paper, “Turkish Diasporic Responses to the Taksim Square Protests: Legacy Media and Social Media Uses in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany,” was published in Telematics and Informatics Sept. 17.
Ogan co-wrote the paper with Roya Imani Giglou of University of Leuven and Leen d’Haenens of the Faculty of Social Sciences at KU Leuven.
The article outlines how the Netherlands and Germany, legacy and social media have affected citizens who participated in the Gezi Park protests in Turkey in 2013.
The research, based on a survey of 967 people living in Belgium, included how living in Europe may have influenced these individuals’ participation and attitudes. The researchers concluded that those supporting the protests generally utilized social media as a platform, while those against followed more traditional media.
Supporters of the protests bonded with others through social media, and a large portion of supporters participated by spreading awareness via social media, engaging in meetings and sometimes cutting contact with those who disagreed with their stances in protest.
Ogan’s research interests combine information and communication technologies with international social and political issues, as well as gender equity in communication.
