Naremore presented with President’s Medal for Excellence
James Naremore, Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus of film studies, English and comparative literature, received the President’s Medal for Excellence Oct. 26.
The President’s Medal for Excellence is presented to those who have achieved exceptional distinction in public service, service to Indiana University, achievement in a profession or exceptional achievement in the arts, humanities, sciences, education and industry.
Naremore’s research focuses on Hollywood directors such as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, John Hutson, Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Kubrick. He helped found the IU Cultural Studies program, founded the Film Studies program and taught courses in film history for both graduate and undergraduate students.
He is author of several books, including More than Night: Film Noir in its Contexts, and was the keynote speaker for the conference 100 Years of Orson Welles: Master of Stage, Sound and Screen, at IU last year. The conference was co-sponsored by The Media School.
