Myrick co-authors paper on media, indoor tanning
Assistant professor Jessica Gall Myrick is co-author of a newly published paper titled “The Relationships Between Female Adolescents’ Media Use, Indoor Tanning Outcome Expectations, and Behavioral Intentions.”
The paper was published in the journal Health Education and Behavior in September and examines the way in which media consumption affects adolescent girls’ opinions on indoor tanning.
The study found that consumption of news media was associated with decreased intentions to tan, while higher consumption of social media was associated with stronger positive beliefs about indoor tanning.
Myrick’s co-authors for this paper were professor Seth Noar and doctoral student Danielle Kelley of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Media and Journalism, and graduate student Alexandra E. Zeitany of UNC’s School of Medicine.
Myrick’s research focuses on the relationship between emotions and media, communication in health, science and environment, entertainment psychology, computer-mediated communication and human-computer interaction.
