Metzgar to lead Howard Fellows to Japan
IU Media School associate professor Emily Metzgar will lead nine top journalism college students on a study tour of Japan in May as part of the school’s partnership with the Scripps Howard Foundation’s Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition.
The nine winners, whose entries represent print, broadcast and online media, were chosen for the high quality of their work, an essay about their interest in international affairs and letters of recommendation.
They will travel with Metzgar May 12-21 to the Kansai region cities of Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. Included in the trip is a visit to Hiroshima, the first city in world history to be devastated by the atomic bomb, and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Park, as well as Tokyo.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for outstanding student journalists from around the United States to visit Japan, a country that was of special interest to Roy Howard throughout his storied career,” Metzgar said. “I am looking forward to accompanying the fellows as they experience Japan for the first time and broaden their global perspectives in the process.”
The competition, established in 1984 in cooperation with Indiana University Journalism, honors the memory of the journalist who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922‐1953 and United Press from 1912‐1920. This year marks the 11th year that the Scripps Howard Foundation has awarded the study tour to Japan to competition winners.
IU has many ties to Roy W. Howard, including housing his archives at Ernie Pyle Hall.
