Kincaid named director of facilities, technology
WTIU director Jay Kincaid has been appointed director of facilities and technology, The Media School announced today.
As part of his new duties, Kincaid will oversee the school’s broadcast studios; equipment management, maintenance, replacement and planning; facilities staff; and the technology needs for academic programs on filmmaking, broadcast production and media equipment.
“I am very excited to be a part of The Media School and to work on creating new facilities that will serve students and faculty for years to come,” said Kincaid, an Emmy Award-winning producer and director. “As a graduate of IU’s telecommunications department, I see this as an amazing opportunity to participate in the next phase of education in an industry and area of study that is experiencing great change.”
Kincaid has worked at WTIU since 1999 and brings three decades of broadcast production experience to his new post. While producing and directing at the station, he also has continued to work on a freelance basis, traveling to New York on weekends to direct sports broadcasts such as MLB Tonight for the Major League Baseball Network, an NFL pre-game show for the CBS Sports Network, and other studio coverage for CBS such as the Final Four and Super Bowl.
Kincaid earned several Emmy Awards for his work at WTIU and his direction of network coverage of Olympic Games, and received his eighth national Emmy in 2012 for his work on MLB Tonight.
Kincaid said he plans to continue some outside work as the experience complements his work at IU by keeping him current with industry needs and technology. His networking with other professionals also has led to internships and jobs for IU students over the years.
“We are delighted that Jay is going to lead the Media School’s efforts to be in the forefront of media technology and facilities for all parts of the curriculum,” says Jean Robinson, associate executive dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Not only has he been a superb member of Radio and Television Services’ professional staff, but his many Emmys, national directing credits and wide industry experience make him the perfect person to lead the school to the front ranks of journalism, communication and film.”
A Bloomington native, Kincaid worked at WTIU while still attending Bloomington High School North, and he continued at the station during his undergraduate studies. Shortly after graduating from IU in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and minors in Russian history and political science, he began working at NBC in New York. He later worked at CNBC for seven years as a senior director, and for King World, which syndicates game, talk and news-related shows.
