Kilgo article: Race-related protests receive more critical news coverage
Protests related to racial issues receive more critical news coverage than other protests, according to a study published by assistant professor Danielle Kilgo.
“Protests, Media Coverage, and a Hierarchy of Social Struggle,” by Kilgo and Summer Harlow of the University of Houston, appears in the latest issue of The International Journal of Press/Politics.
The researchers examined articles about protests from 16 Texas newspapers of varying circulation sizes. They found that stories about protests against anti-black racism and discrimination of Indigenous people were more often framed negatively than stories about protests about immigrants’ rights, health and the environment.
