Johnson, Hays article in Traces
Associate Professor Emeritus Owen Johnson and Holly Hays, BAJ’16, are authors of “Wrestling with Fame: Ernie Pyle and the Pulitzer Prize,” published in the spring issue of Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History.
The article discusses four of Pyle’s Pulitzer-nominated articles, including the one that won the prize in 1944. Pyle, an IU journalism alumnus, was a syndicated columnist who covered World War II from the soldier’s perspective.
Hays and Johnson wrote the article using archived copies of Pyle’s articles and copies of letters in which he discusses his feelings about the prize.
Hays was a student in Johnson’s class, From London to Paris: In the Footsteps of Ernie Pyle, in 2013. The class focuses on the life and work of Ernie Pyle, and students travel over spring break to follow his travels throughout England and France.
