Historic Apollo Theater inspires with MLK day screenings
The Media Living Learning Center students visited New York City on a networking and experience trip over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Jan. 15-18. During the trip, they met with alumni and toured the offices of New York’s famous media sites.

After riding in the New York Subway system for the first time in my life, we had reached our destination of 125th street. Unbeknownst to us we still a solid twenty minute walk ahead of us, but reaching that checkpoint raised our spirits.
Eventually we reached our destination of the historic Apollo Theater, which stood out prominently on the street with its impressive and distinct marquee. Like every other destination on our trip, we had to take a few moments for everyone to pull out their cameras, phones, and camera phones so they could take pictures. We joined the line and entered the building and were herded up steps onto the second balcony of seats.
Soon after the event started, I was not sure what exactly to expect. I had read descriptions of the event but none of them really could invoke the full experience to me. The event was packed with interviews, panels, sermons, and music. All of which were riveting and fascinating in their own ways but had a sense of cohesion with their connection to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his views and teachings. That was the most powerful part of the event to me.
The bluntness and boldness of what they were saying was moving and had an impact on the entirety of the audience. This was an experience I will not forget anytime soon.
