Comfort article establishes NGO-produced journalism’s 50-year history
NGO-subsidized and produced journalism is often framed as a byproduct of the recent economic decline of traditional news organizations, but the practice has a 50-year history, assistant professor Suzannah Evans Comfort illustrates in an article published in Journalism.
“‘Audobon is not Audubon’: Journalism as communicative logic in the pages of an NGO-produced magazine, 1960-1976” uses Audobon, the official publication of the National Audubon Society, as a case study on advocacy journalism.
It analyzes the 120-year-old magazine’s activities from 1960-76, the time period during which it evolved from a bird-watching journal to an independent journalistic entity.
