Camaj study on FOI laws in journal
Lindita Camaj, MA’05, PhD’11, is author of “Governments’ Uses and Misuses of Freedom of Information Laws in Emerging European Democracies,” published in Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly’s December 2016 issue.
In the article, Camaj examines freedom of information laws’ impact on news agenda-building in Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. She used interviews with journalists from all three territories to draw conclusions.
Camaj asserts that while FOI laws can facilitate access to otherwise unavailable information, these laws can also hinder journalists’ ability to report beyond the “official” storyline, since the government controls information access.
Camaj now is an assistant professor in journalism and mass communication at the University of Houston.
