Blevins, Hilkowitz place 1st, 5th in Hearst writing competition
Two Media School students placed in the Personality/Profile Writing Competition of the 2024-2025 Hearst Journalism Awards Programs. The winners were selected from 130 entries from 72 schools.

Senior Nicole Blevins was awarded first place for her Indiana Daily Student story, “’We deserve to stay.’ Dreamer faces uncertainty as election approaches.” The article follows an IU alumnus in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program as the 2024 presidential election approached. Blevins also qualified for Hearst’s National Writing Championship in June.

Junior Mia Hilkowitz earned fifth place for her Indiana Daily Student story, “Dog Number One.” The article centers around a skittish dog named Morty, who awaits adoption after being recovered during a seizure of 67 dogs from a tiny house in 2023.
This was the third writing competition of the year, and winners were selected from 130 entries from 72 schools submitted.
The Journalism Awards Program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. There are currently 105 universities with accredited undergraduate journalism programs that are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
Indiana University is currently in fifth place in their Intercollegiate Writing Competition, which is based on points accumulated by students taking part in competitions.
