Assistant editors of Chicago magazine meet with students
By Kate Halliwell
Our group of Media Ambassadors and Ernie Pyle Scholars arrived early to the Chicago Tribune building to visit Chicago magazine. After walking there, we spent a few minutes circling the building. We learned that set into the walls are imported rocks that come from destinations all around the world, including the Great Pyramids, the White House, Hamlet’s Castle and the Taj Mahal.
Inside, IU alumna and assistant editor at Chicago magazine Carrie Schedler greeted us. She works in the magazine’s dining section and the colleague who was with her, Matt Pollock, is a fellow assistant editor and works in the news section. Some things that struck us were how young the people that we met were, and how they answered our questions as easily as someone who knew exactly where we were coming from.
We covered topics ranging from how the magazine comes together for publication, to how the staff has been expanding their online and digital departments. Flipping through the latest issue of Chicago magazine, we discussed recent articles and feature stories about “Yelpers of Chicago,” bridal tips and a famous tennis coach in the city.
The conversation fell on the subject of internships, so Pollock explained how the magazine’s internship system works. He discussed the importance of writing experience and fact checking, and encouraged everyone to apply to work with Chicago magazine.
Because the magazine was in the process of moving, we didn’t get a tour of the newsroom, but the informal conference room discussion made for an engaging and educational experience. The visit ended with an exchange of business cards, some last minute advice and restaurant recommendations for that night.
