Anderson explores race stereotypes in FIFA 22
Media School doctoral student Johnathan Anderson’s research, “Is it in the Game? Reflections of Race-Based Stereotypes in EA SPORTS FIFA 22,” was published on July 24 in Communication & Sport.
The study investigated an element of representation in video games, primarily how the representation in the popular sports video game, EA Sports FIFA 2022, correlates to the traditional racial stereotypes found in sports media. Anderson studied the differences between athletes of different skin colors across an array of mental and physical attributes within the game.
Anderson’s studies focus on the overlap of sports, identity, and media. He investigates how sports construct and deconstruct feelings of national identity in fans and observes the role of social media and video games in fan experiences.
