3 Media School students present at MPCA conference
Media School students Natalie Cartmel, Imani Hawkins, and Grace Romine traveled to Chicago to present their study, “Breaking News (Taylor’s Version): The New York Times and a Taylor Swift Media Frenzy,” at the Midwest Popular Culture Association Annual Conference on Friday. The three students presented the study during the first Print Media panel on the first day of the conference. When they returned to campus, they also presented their research to a pop culture class at IU on Monday.
Cartmel, Hawkins, and Romine began their study while mentees of assistant professor Lisa Lenoir as a part of the Center of Excellence in Women & Technology’s Emerging Scholars 2023-2024 program. They continued it through Lenoir’s research lab.
The MPCA conference, held Oct. 4-6 this year, invites scholars of all levels to present research that studies popular culture each year. The conference is typically held at DePaul University.
