¿Qué hay de nuevo in American news media?: A Race, Media, and Justice series talk
Join us as Lourdes M. Cueva Chacón, Ph.D., presents “¿Qué hay de nuevo in American news media? Latinx journalism’s new routines to achieve the same old goal: to serve Latinx communities’ information needs.”
As media that has emerged in the digital world, digital Latinx news media organizations are young, technically savvy, and are reaching communities where they are, which sometimes means producing news for non-traditional media such as messaging apps. These organizations are increasingly being created as non-profits, are fostering transnational spaces for their teams and their audiences, and are getting more vocal about amplifying the voices of their communities.
Lourdes M. Cueva Chacón, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University. Her research focuses on digital journalism in the Americas and Latino/a/x Journalism in the U.S. Cueva Chacón has professional experience reporting the U.S.-Mexico border. Her research has been published in top-tier journals such as Digital Journalism, Journalism Practice, and Feminist Studies. She is the co-editor of “The Routledge Companion to Latino/a/x Journalism” (with Jessica Retis, Routledge forthcoming).
The event is sponsored by the Journalism Unit of The Media School’s Race, Media, and Justice Series.
