The effects of gold mining in Romania

A Romanian gold mine — In 1971, surface mining for gold began in the Cetate Mountain in the Rosia Montana Valley. For nearly 2,000 years, underground mining in Cetate was the main source of gold in the Apuseni Mountains. The surface mine took off nearly 100 meters of elevation off the mountain and the mine was eventually shut down in 2006. (Mark Felix)

Mark Felix, the 2015 recipient of the Ross Hazeltine Travel Scholarship, traveled through Romania to capture the effects of gold mining and displacement in Carpathian Mountains.
