Social Media and Fashion Reporting

Report from the runway

Report on trends, designers and issues from one of the world’s global fashion centers, and learn from prominent fashion voices at major publications. Social Media and Fashion Reporting is a four-credit, semester-long course during spring semester that applies multimedia journalism skills to the topic of fashion. The class includes spring break travel to New York City.

Taught by associate professor Lesa Major, who worked as a reporter and news anchor for eight years, the course gives students the opportunity to report on fashion and to consider how social media is impacting the fashion industry itself. During their trip to NYC, students will visit news organizations, design studios, corporate offices and fashion museums.


To apply for the course, you must:

  • Be on track to be a sophomore by credit hours (30 hours completed) by the end of fall 2019 semester.
  • Have a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Be on track to be admitted to The Media School by the end of the fall 2019 semester.
  • Be on track to have completed MSCH-C226 by the end of the fall 2019 semester. (Instructor will consider other production/reporting courses to be substituted as a prerequisite on a case-by-case basis.)

The Media School provides a scholarship to all Media School students admitted to this course to lower the course fee that is assessed for travel.

Full program cost: $700
Scholarship: $175
Course fee after scholarship: $525

The course fee covers lodging, all required activities, health insurance and some meals.

The fee does not include airfare. Students are responsible for booking and paying for their own transportation to and from New York City.

We recommend students also have $200-$400 available during the trip to cover meals and personal expenses.
