Biography
Madhuvanti Karyekar joined the Media School in May 2023 as an Academic Advisor.
Prior to transitioning into her role as an academic advisor at the Media School, Karyekar taught German language, literature, translation studies, and cultural studies courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels at various academic institutions, including Indiana University, Bloomington, Ohio State University, and Savitribai Phule Pune University, India.
She received her PhD in Modern German Literature and Culture from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 2014. Her doctoral dissertation argued for a “self-reflexive” anthropology discernible in the travelogues and travel-related critical essays of Georg Forster (1754–94) by focusing on three salient recurring concepts in his revolutionary approach to writing anthropology: observation, narration, and translation.
With bachelor’s degrees in German Studies and Sanskrit, and MA & MPhil in German Language and Literature with a focus on literary translation, she enjoys exploring through teaching and research how linguistics, literary studies, and interculturality can inform theories and practices of translation. Her publications have focused on Forster’s anthropological writings and on the late eighteenth-century translations of ancient Indian Sanskrit texts into German and the literary and anthropological impact of such translations.
Karyekar is convinced that her passion for philosophies of language, the creation of meaning, meta-linguistic translation, and communication across cultures immensely helps her establish trusted connections with students as an advisor. Deeply rooted in her academic training in the liberal arts, she strives to help her students discover the “logic of the curriculum,” develop meaningful academic and professional goals consistent with their values, interests, strengths, and skills, and make informed decisions about their academic and career development through her advising practices.
