Bob Jenkins died Aug. 9, 2021, at age 73. 

He started with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway radio network in 1979 and remained there through 1998, serving as lead announcer starting in 1981. He called the race's closest finish in 1992. 

He also called many NASCAR races over the years, including the first seven Briyard 400s. Jenkins was born Sept. 4, 1947, in RIchmond, Indiana, and raised in nearby Liberty. He graduated from Short High School in 1965 and IU in 1969.
