If the Big Apple is your dream destination to learn and grow as a young professional, apply now to be a part of the first Summer in New York City cohort. Summer in New York will launch as a pilot program with a select group of Media School students during summer 2019.
As a participant in the program, you’ll work in a New York-based internship (or two) in a media field. You’ll live with other students in dorm-style housing in the beautiful Brooklyn Heights neighborhood and participate in group activities and outings throughout the term.
Who can apply?
For the inaugural summer term, the program will accept only rising juniors and seniors from The Media School, with priority given to rising seniors. International students are welcome to apply, but due to visa restrictions, may not participate in the program if it will be their last semester at IU. International students must complete their final semester on the Bloomington campus.
Students are required to work one internship during their time in New York, and the Summer in New York City staff will assist students with internship searches in the following ways:
- Individual meetings to determine interests, target industries and companies
- Providing internship leads
- Creating opportunities for in-person meetings on campus when possible
- Advising on the application process
- Individualized feedback on resumes, cover letters and portfolios
- Assisting with application follow-up
- Assisting with the decision process when the student is ready to accept a position
Students will ultimately secure their own internship and negotiate their hours and start and end dates themselves with the guidance of program staff.
Students in the program are required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week at a paid or unpaid internship site, but are welcome and encouraged to take on more hours and a potential second internship should their primary internship site allow. Students will be able to earn anywhere from three to six credits for their internship(s) over the summer.
