Experiences outside the classroom are an essential part of media students’ education.
At the Indiana University Media School, students have access to courses that take them around the globe, honors programs that stretch their intellect, media newsmakers who visit campus, and campus media and student organizations where they can learn leadership skills. These experiences prepare students for internships and careers here and abroad.
This group of students serves as the face of the school, facilitating at special events, traveling to media outlets and escorting prospective students around campus.
Field experiences include courses in which travel is a component of the semester’s work, as well as opportunities for students to travel to conferences and seminars that are not directly related to coursework. These are open to graduate and undergraduate students.
Students benefit from the variety of top media professionals who visit the school through several programs. These include the Speaker Series, which brings top professionals to the area for public lectures, class visits and informal chats. Individual professors invite guest lecturers to their classes, and student organizations often ask national leaders to attend meetings. Alumni visit as speakers or to advise students in the job search, such as leading resume and portfolio workshops.
Honors programs provide high-achieving students with a faculty mentor for all of their undergraduate years and offer some additional travel opportunities. Students also will be eligible to take honors versions of core courses. Students may apply for this and other specialty programs when they apply to IU.
The school’s students often are invited to join national academic honors organizations such as Kappa Tau Alpha, Alpha Delta Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa.
Media Living Learning Center
The Media Living Learning Center offers a residential program for students interested in all forms of media. They all live in a dedicated residence hall area, where they may collaborate and work on projects. They take one class together, and travel to visit media organizations for talks and tours.
Media students may practice what they learn in class at campus and local organizations. Newspapers, TV and radio outlets, nonprofits and local businesses often have job openings and internships available to students. These experiences enhance classroom learning by providing hands-on training.
