I’ve taught journalism at IU since 2002. For 15 years before joining the School of Journalism, I worked at The Indianapolis Star and The Indianapolis News. My most recent title there was deputy managing editor of The Star, but I also worked as managing editor, features editor, columnist, editorial writer and writing coach at The News before it merged with The Star. Before that, I was editor of Indianapolis Magazine for four years.
I’m a past president of Indiana AP Managing Editors and the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists, and I often lead writing workshops for professional and student associations. I have a degree in journalism and English from IU and was a reporter and desk editor at the IDS.
I’ve written for a variety of magazines, including AARP the Magazine, O Magazine, Indiana Alumni Magazine, Reader’s Digest and Down East, and I'm a frequent contributor to Indianapolis Monthly.
