My research interests primarily lie in the cognitive and emotional effects of audio in media. As a trained audio engineer and avid music fan, I find it extremely interesting to approach the effects of audio from a wide range of perspectives – that of the listener and the producer, from the social level to the individual. I also have an interest in the ways people use (especially new and emerging) media platforms to communicate information in social settings. My foremost current area of focus lies in understanding the role of musical features such as complexity and intensity as they relate to attention, arousal, and affect in the listener.
My teaching experience includes classes in both media production and processes and effects, as well as a few that cover more above-the-line and industry-oriented topics. I enjoy finding parallels between my research interests and teaching work almost as much as I like the process of teaching marketable skills and empowering students to follow their interests.
In addition to my research and teaching, I work on writing, producing, and engineering for music projects, as well as serving as an audio specialist for video productions.
