The fall 2016 semester starts Aug. 22. For students of The Media School, that means it’s time to explore their new home in Franklin Hall. They will have opportunities to work with new equipment, choose new majors and take new courses not previously offered.
But with the new building comes an opportunity to get lost on the way to class. Use this guide to help find your way around Franklin Hall and make it to wherever you need to be.
Room 312 is a lecture hall located in Level 3 of the building. To find it, go in the front door of Franklin Hall and up the steps into the lobby. Take the staircase on your right to Level 3. Go through the double doors and around to your right, and follow the hallway until you reach 312. You can also find room 310 here. Taking the elevator in the lobby (to your right after you come up the lobby steps) will also get you to the Level 3 classrooms.
If you need to meet with a professor or see an administrator, your best option is the glass elevator found in the commons area of Franklin Hall. It reaches every floor and will open up to the lounge areas for each one. As long as you know which floor your professors are on, this elevator should make it easy to find them.
The Multimedia Lab
The multimedia lab is outfitted with Mac desktop computers perfect for editing photos, video and audio. If you have a project you need to work on, you can find this lab in room 073 in the basement. Walk down the stairs just inside the main entrance and take a left. Take another left when the hallway splits into three. The lab will be at the end of the hall. Bonus: It has large windows overlooking Sample Gates.
Formerly housed within the multimedia lab of Ernie Pyle, the equipment checkout now has a space on the main floor of Franklin Hall. If you need to check out equipment for a project, you can find the station in room 120. Walk through the commons area to the back right corner and follow the hallway there until you see the checkout window on your right. There is still is a second equipment checkout room in the Radio-TV Building.
The Game Lab
Studying game design or programming? You’ll be spending a lot of time in the game lab on the basement level. The easiest way to get there is to use the small staircase on the right side of the commons area, just under the large projection screen. Walk down these steps and take a left. The game lab is located in room 035 and 035A, just inside the doorway for room 030.
The Ken and Audrey Beckley Studio
If your interest is broadcast television, you’ll be spending some time in the Ken and Audrey Beckley Studio. This space is located on the right side of the commons area, and its control room is located right next door. Walk along the wall and you should find it without a problem.
Student media has been brought together in one room of Franklin Hall. Media groups including The Indiana Daily Student, Inside Magazine and Arbutus have a new headquarters in room 127. Walk along the left side of the Franklin Hall commons to find the shared newsroom and offices.
Franklin Hall includes a screening room for viewing films. It’s located in the southeastern corner of the third floor and is connected to a room with a projector. You can find it in room 304C. Take a right after entering Franklin Hall and take the staircase. Taking the elevator in the lobby (to your right after you come up the lobby steps) will also get you to your destination. Go through the double doors at the top of the stairs and take a left to find room 304 and a right just inside to find the screening room. Taking the elevator in the lobby (to your right after you come up the lobby steps) will also get you to your destination.
Institute for Communication Research
The Institute for Communication Research is located in the basement of the building. To get there, you need to walk down the steps just inside the main entrance of Franklin Hall and take a right. Follow this hallway until you reach room 012.
